An October week – Paris 2018

Two wonderful artists (JMB and ES) shown together – so different, different eras, but both died early at the same age there abouts – so raw.

Creating marks in fashion and textiles

To begin with, a few basic sewing methods using very utilitarian materials. Here are examples of basic straight stitching, back stitching, making a simple seam, tying knots to make constructions, slashing fabric and inserting fabrics behind or in front using bubble wrap, plastic bags, bin bag, J-Cloth calico.

Destroying work to make new

Paper and thread – amazing what you can do based on a picture of a brush and the word “hole”.

Tearing up a picture to make objects – unusual feeling – challenging

Utensils were the theme for the first 6 weeks.

Week 1 Looking, thinking, researching, mind mapping, drawing, making utensils. Here are some creations based on an old metal basket. Thanks for your help Bina!

Mmm … is it finished now?

Drawing and other technique demonstrations are going to be so helpful. Using chalk, ink, graphite stick, newspaper, rubber – see what happens. Good advice. If you run out of paper add some on. Use things you are not keen on for collage. Tear them up and reuse. Such a freeing way to work.

Abstract brush head. Original drawing using emulsion, news paper, ink, graphite, chalk. A new experience. Expecting Mr Twit to appear from the bristles.

Here I go!

I started on the Art Foundation Course at Chesterfield College on 10th September 2018. I’m having a wonderful, experimental time.  Finally I have landed in what I hope will become my natural habitat after I throw off the mantle of regulation and control that is required during a long and successful career in Children’s Services. I like to manipulate materials to create something wonderful.  For me art is not only about painting and drawing, although I seriously need to develop those skills, I like the materials in my hands. I think you can do something very expressive with almost anything. I like using inexpensive, natural and found materials and recycling. I bring other aspects of life  into my work such as family, loss, travel, politics and history.
